Inner Perceiver
The Inner Perceiver series draws upon both Western and Asian conceptions to represent the release of the soul, the Inner Perceiver, from the material world, here represented by double registers of fields of abraded paint. As in the Atman works, Inner Perceiver speaks to the endless transmigration of the self or soul from matter, or conversely, to matter. In these works the soul is represented by a pure gold thread vibrating within the cosmic void, referencing both Asian conceptions of vibrating energy and Western conceptions of string theory. The undulating forms of the paint registers reference the forms of the saggital sutures of the cranium, from which in Tibetan and Hindu thought the soul is thought to emerge at the time of death. In concept and material, the series alludes to the gom-shing, or meditation wood.
Inner Perceiver is a contemporary meditation on impermanence.
